জীবনে কখনো ভাবিনি যে ছোট বেলার স্বপ্নের কোম্পানি গুগল থেকে আমার ইন্টারভিউ এর জন্য অফার আসবে আর আমাকে তা ফিরিয়ে দিতে হবে। তার পিছে কারনও ছিলো অবশ্য, সেটা পরেই বলি।
আমার শৈশব কাটে সাতক্ষীরাতে। বাবা মা ছিলেন চাকরিজীবি। স্কুল জীবনে কখনো তেমন আহামরি ভালো স্টুডেন্ট ছিলাম না। তৃতীয় শ্রেনীতে যখন সাতক্ষীরা সরকারী উচ্চ বিদ্যালয়ে পড়ার সুযোগ হয় তখন ক্লাসের শেষ ছেলেটি ছিলাম আমি, রোল ছিলো ৫৭।
এবং পরের শ্রেনীগুলোতেও এই অবস্থার তেমন উন্নতি হয় নাই।
একটি মধ্যবিত্ত একান্নবর্তী পরিবারের সব থেকে বড় অভিবাবক হওয়ার কারনে বাবা-মার অনেক দায়িত্ব ছিলো, যে কারনে আমার প্রতি কখনো এক্সপেক্টেশন রাখতেন না।
আমার যেদিকে ইচ্ছে ওইদিকেই লাইফ গোল সেট করার স্বাধীনতা দিয়েছিলেন। যেই বিষয় আমার ভালো লাগতো, কেবল ওই বিষয়টাই বেশি পড়তাম সবসময়। যে কারনে একটা বিষয়ে ভালো ফলাফল আসলেও বাকিগুলোতে টেনেটুনে কেবল থার্ড টার্ম পরীক্ষায় পাস করেও পরের ক্লাসে উঠছি এমন অনেকবার ঘটেছে।
ছোটবেলা থেকেই বিজ্ঞান এবং টেকনোলজির প্রতি আগ্রহ আমার খুব বেশি ছিল। এখনও মনে আছে ক্লাস সিক্সে একবার একটি টেলিফোন বানিয়েছিলাম নিজের পেট প্রোজেক্ট হিসেবে।
এইভাবেই কাটে স্কুল জীবন। কলেজে উঠে প্রথম কম্পিউটার পাই। কলেজ প্রথম বর্ষে বন্ধু শুভর কাছ থেকে পাওয়া “নিটনের সি” বইটি দেখে কিছু বেসিক প্রোগ্রাম লিখছিলাম।
তখন থেকে কম্পিউটার সায়েন্সে ক্যারিয়ার গড়ার স্বপ্ন বুনতে শুরু করি। এবং মাইক্রোসফট, গুগলের মত কোম্পানিগুলোতে কোটি মানুষের জীবন সহজ করার সফটওয়্যার বানানোর দিবাস্বপ্ন দেখতে থাকতাম।
কলেজ শেষে এইচএসসি-তে রেজাল্ট তেমন ভাল হল না। বুয়েটের ফর্ম তুলতে পারলাম না। ঢাকা বিশ্ববিদ্যালয়ে চান্স পেলেও মা জোর করলে রুয়েট, কুয়েটের ফর্ম তুলি।
ভাগ্যক্রমে রুয়েটে স্বপ্নের ডিপার্টমেন্ট কম্পিউটার সায়েন্সে পড়ার সুযোগ পেলাম। রুয়েট জীবন নিয়ে গল্প বলতে গেলে কয়েক রাত পার করে দেয়া যাবে। ডিপার্টমেন্টে আমি খুবই ভাল একটা ফ্রেন্ড সার্কেল পাই, যেখানে বিভিন্ন বিষয়ে আগ্রহী বন্ধু পাই।
পাশাপাশি হল লাইফটাও ইঞ্জয় করতে থাকি। রুয়েট লাইফটা জুনিয়র, সিনিয়র, ক্লাসমেটদের জন্যই মূলত আনন্দমুখর ছিলো।
সেলিম হল, হামিদ হল, টিনশেড হলে থাকার মুহূর্তগুলো ছিল অবিস্মরণীয়। বিশেষ করে সন্ধ্যায় কারেন্ট চলে গেলেই টিনশেড হলের মাঝে গোল চত্বরে বসে সবাই মিলে বসে গান, মাঝে মধ্যে বাস্কেটবল গ্রাউন্ডে গিটার বাজানো, রাতে ১৫-২০ জন মিলে রাজশাহীর গলিতে গলিতে ঘুরে গান গাওয়া আজও মিস করি।
রুয়েট এসে সিনিয়রদের কাছ থেকে কমপিটেটিভ প্রোগ্রামিং-এর সাথে পরিচয় ঘটে। প্রোগ্রামিং করতে গিয়ে খেয়াল করলাম গণিতে আমার ব্যাসিক খুবই দুর্বল।
সে সময় ক্লাস ৯-১০ এর গণিত বই থেকে শুরু করলাম। রুয়েটে আমাদের প্রোগ্রামিং এর জন্য তেমন সুবিধা ছিলনা। একটা অ্যালগরিদম শিখতে দেখা যেত ২-৩ সপ্তাহ লাগতো।
এরপর আমরা একজন শিখে আরেকজনকে সেটা শেখাতাম। সে সময়টা প্রোগ্রামিং শেখার জন্য বেশ কষ্ট করতে হয়েছিল।
অনেকবার এমনও হয়েছে যে নিজের টাকা দিয়ে প্রোগ্রামিং কনটেস্ট করতে গেছি আমরা যেখানে অন্য বিশ্ববিদ্যালয়ের বাকি সব টীমগুলোকে বিশ্ববিদ্যালয় থেকেই অর্থায়ন করে কনটেস্টে পাঠানো হতো।
মনে পড়ে আমাদের অ্যালগরিদম চর্চা করার কোন জায়গা না থাকায় রুয়েট প্লে-গ্রাউন্ডে বসে জুনিয়রদের সাথে হোয়াইট বোর্ড নিয়ে এক সাথে আলোচনা করার কথা।
অনেক প্রচেষ্টার পর ফোর্থ ইয়ারে এসে আমাদের সবার এত বছরের চেষ্টা দেখে হেড স্যার আমাদের একটা ল্যাব দেন চর্চা চালিয়ে যাওয়ার জন্য।
তিনি ল্যাবের নাম দেন এনালাইটিক্যাল প্রোগ্রামিং ল্যাব। এটা হয়ে উঠেছিলো আমাদের প্রোগ্রামিং হাব।
রাজশাহীর গরমে মশার কামড় খেয়ে এই ল্যাবে জুনিয়রদের সাথে সারা রাত জেগে প্রোগ্রামিং করে ভোরবেলা তালাইমারী যেয়ে এক কাপ চা খাওয়ার স্মৃতিগুলো মনে পড়লে এখনও মুখের কোণে একটা হাসি চলে আসে।
এই ল্যাবেই আমরা অনেক রকম অ্যাক্টিভিটি করতাম, তার মধ্যে উল্লেখযোগ্য হলো “জ্ঞান-jam” নামক কনটেস্টটি। প্রতিবছর বিদায়ী ব্যাচের দায়িত্ব থাকে বিদায়ের আগে একটা “জ্ঞান-jam” আয়োজন করা। ভাবলেই খুবই গর্ব হয় যে সেই সংষ্কৃতিটা জুনিয়ররা এখনও চালিয়ে যাচ্ছে।
প্রোগ্রামিং এর পাশাপাশি আমরা RUET জীবনটা আরও মজার করার জন্য বেশ কয়েকটি সংগঠন বানাই সবাই মিলেই। তার মধ্যে উল্লেখযোগ্য হলো Science and Astronomy Society of RUET (ASSR), চিরকুমার সংঘ, সমানুপাতিক, প্রচেষ্টা সহ বেশ কিছু সংগঠন।
আমি রুয়েটে এসে নিজস্ব “Reason to Live” নামের একটি লিস্ট তৈরি করি। কেও আমাকে কোন কিছু পারবো না এমন কিছু বললে আমি সেটা লিখে রাখতাম। যদি কখনও ভুল প্রমান করতে পারি এটা ভেবে।
আলহামদুলিল্লাহ বেশ অনেকগুলোই ভুল প্রমান করতে পেরেছি। ফোর্থ ইয়ারে উঠে একবার একটা কনটেস্টে একটা প্রবলেমও সল্ভ করতে পারল না আমাদের টিম, আমরা খুবই লজ্জায় পড়ে যাই।
ডিপার্টমেন্টের এক শিক্ষিকা ক্লাসে সবার সামনে অপমান করে বলছিলেন, “রুয়েট থেকে কখনও কেও গুগল মাইক্রোসফটে চাকরি পাবে না। তাই পড়াশোনায় মনোযোগ দাও”।
কথাটা খুবই গাঁয়ে লেগেছিলো। সেটা শোনার পর আমার এক বন্ধু রবিকে বলেছিলাম শেষ পর্যন্ত চেষ্টা করবো আমি মাইক্রোসফট বা গুগলে যাওয়ার জন্য।
ক্যারিয়ারের শুরুটা হয় শেষ সেমিস্টার শুরুর ঠিক এক সপ্তাহ আগে। রাজশাহী বিশ্ববিদ্যালয়ের জব ফেয়ারে সেলিস রকিং সফটওয়্যার কোম্পানিতে চাকরি পাই।
জীবনের মোড়টা ঘুরে সুইডেনের অ্যাডফেনিক্স এবি নামক স্টার্টআপে চাকরির মাধ্যমে। প্রথমে দেশ ছাড়া লাগবে ভেবে রিজেক্ট করার সিদ্ধান্ত নেই। কিন্তু সবার পরামর্শে এক্সেপ্ট করি। একটু ভ্রমণপিপাসু হওয়ায় অস্ট্রেলিয়া এবং সিঙ্গাপুরে চাকরি অফার আসলেও ইউরোপকেই বেছে নিয়েছিলাম।
এরপর সুইডেনের সনামধন্য ন্যাসডাক কোম্পানিতে চাকরি পাই। এর মাঝেই ২৩ মার্চ,২০১৮ তে ডাক আসে স্বপ্নের কোম্পানি থেকে। ফোনে যখন বলল মাইক্রোসফট কোম্পানি থেকে বলছেন, আমি ভেবেছি আমি হয়তো ভুল শুনেছি।
বিশ্বাস হচ্ছিল না, উত্তেজনায় জিজ্ঞাস করে বসি,”তুমি সিরিয়াসলি মাইক্রোসফট থেকে বলছো?” চাকরি পাওয়ার খবর জানাতে ফোন দেই মা-বাবাকে। মা-বাবাকে চাকরির খবর দেয়ার পর খেয়াল করলাম আমার চোখে পানি চলে এসেছে।
জীবনের এতো সময় পর আমি প্রথম বুঝতে পারলাম এটাই আনন্দের অশ্রু। অবশেষে ডেনমার্কে এসে জয়েন করি স্বপ্নের কোম্পানিতে। দিনটি ছিল ঈদের দিন। আমার জীবনের বেস্ট ঈদ। ইনফ্যাক্ট বেস্ট মোমেন্ট।
এবার আসি কেন আর একটা স্বপ্নের কোম্পানির ইনটারভিউ অফার আমাকে রিজেক্ট করতে হলো। মাইক্রোসফটে জব হওয়ার ঠিক তিন মাসের মধ্যেই গুগল থেকেও ইন্টারভিউ-এর ডাক আসে।
কিন্তু কেবলই মাইক্রোসফটে জয়েন করার কারণে গুগলে আর ইন্টারভিউ দেয়া হয়নি। রিক্রুটারের সাথে এখনও মাঝে মধ্যে কনট্যাক্ট হলেও মাইক্রোসফট ছাড়ার মন এখনও হয় নাই।
আমির খানের থ্রি ইডিয়টস মুভিটা আমার খুবই প্রিয় একটা মুভি। এই মুভিতে যেমনটা দেখেছিলাম, আমি খুব করে চাইতাম এমন কিছু যেন আমার সাথেও হয়।
এখন নিজের পছন্দের কাজ করছি, পৃথিবীর অন্যতম সেরা সফটওয়্যার কোম্পানিতে। বিকাল ৫টা পর্যন্ত অফিস থাকলেও অনেক সময়েই আমি রাত ৯টা পর্যন্ত অফিস করি।
আমার কাজ আমার এতো প্রিয় বলেই হয়ত টের পাইনা সময় কখন চলে যাচ্ছে। বছর খানেক আগে ডেনমার্কে একটি শিক্ষক সেমিনার আয়োজন করে মাইক্রোসফট যেখানে আমাকে একটা টক দেয়া লাগছিলো।
আমি সেখানে গিয়ে রুয়েটে আমার অভিজ্ঞতার কথা শেয়ার করি। কিভাবে রুয়েটে RAPL, ASSR এর মত শিক্ষণীয় সংগঠনগুলো তৈরি করেছিলাম আমরা। সবাই বেশ মুগ্ধ হয়ে আমাদের কাহিনীগুলো শুনেছিলেন।
অন্য সবার মতই রুয়েটে থাকা অবস্থায় অনেক সময় নিজের মধ্যে হতাশা কাজ করত। মনে হত, যদি আশে পাশে কোন নিদর্শন থাকতো যাকে দেখলে মনে হতো যে আমরাও পারবো।
সে সময়ে সামাদ ভাই, মুফতি ভাই, রিফাত ভাই, মেরিন ভাই সহ বেশ অনেকে ছিলেন যাদের অনুপ্রেরণায় নিজেকে অনেক বড় জায়গায় কল্পনা করতে পারতাম। এক-একজন মানুষের কাছে সফলতার মাপকাঠি এক-একরকম।
প্রতিটা মানুষ তার নিজের মত করে সফল হয়। আমার মতে আমার মত below average একটা ছাত্রের মাইক্রোসফটে আসাকে যদি সত্যিই সফলতা মনে হয়ে থাকে, তাহলে আমি বলবো রুয়েটে প্রতিটা স্টুডেন্ট এর এই পটেনশিয়াল আছে।

I never thought that my childhood dream company Google would come up with an offer for my interview and I would have to reject it. Of course, there was a reason behind it, I will say it later.
I spent my childhood in Satkhira. My parents were employees. I was not a good student in school life.
When I had the opportunity to study in Satkhira Government High School in class three, I was the last boy in the class, the roll was 57. And in the next classes, the situation did not improve much.
Being the biggest guardian of a middle-class extended family, my parents had a lot of responsibilities, so they never had much expectations from me.
They gave me the freedom to set life goals however I saw fit. I always studied the subject that I liked the most. That is why it has happened so many times that I got good results in one subject but barely passed in another.
From an early age, I was very interested in science and technology. I still remember making a telephone in class six as my own pet project. This is how school life ended. I got my first computer in college.
In my first year of college, I was learning some basic programs by looking at the book “Niton’s C” from my friend Shuvo. From then on, I started dreaming of building a career in computer science.
And I used to dream of making software to make the lives of millions of people easier in companies like Microsoft and Google. At the end of college, the results in HSC were not as expected.
I failed to get the form of BUET. Although I got a chance at Dhaka University, but when my mother insisted, I took the form of RUET and KUET.
Luckily I got the opportunity to study in the dream department computer science at RUET.
A few nights can be spent talking about the life of RUET. In the department, I found a very good friend circle, where I found friends interested in various subjects.
Besides, I continued to enjoy my hall life. RUET Life was basically a joy for juniors, seniors, classmates.
The memories of staying in Selim Hall, Hamid Hall, Tinshed Hall were unforgettable.
I still miss when the current went out especially in the evenings, everyone sat in the round square in the middle of the Tinshed Hall and sang together, sometimes playing the guitar on the basketball ground, singing in the streets of Rajshahi with 15-20 people at night.
When I came to RUET, I got acquainted with competitive programming from seniors. While doing programming, I noticed that my basic in mathematics was very weak.
At that time I started from class 9-10 math book. RUET did not have much facilities for our programming.
It would take 2-3 weeks to learn an algorithm. Then we would learn it and teach it to another. That time I had to work hard to learn programming.
There have been many times when we have gone to a programming contest with our own money where all the other teams from other universities are funded by the university.
I remember we had no place to practice the algorithm, so we had to sit on the RUET playground and discuss it together with the juniors on the whiteboard.
After many efforts, in the fourth year, after seeing all our efforts for so many years, Head Sir gave us a lab to continue the practice.
He gave the lab name Analytical Programming Lab. It became our programming hub.
The memories of having mosquitoes bite in the heat of Rajshahi, waking up all night programming with the juniors in this lab, going to Talaimari in the morning and having a cup of tea still brings a smile to my face.
We used to do a lot of activities in that lab, the most notable of the contest was the “Gyaan-Jam”.
Every year the farewell batch is responsible for organizing a “Gyaan-Jam” before the farewell. I am very proud to think that the juniors are still carrying on that culture.
In addition to programming, we made a number of organizations to make RUET life more fun.
Among them are the Science and Astronomy Society of RUET (ASSR), Chirokumar Sangha, Somanupatik, including Prochesta and several other organizations. When I came to Ruet, I made my own list called “Reason to Live”.
If someone told me something I couldn’t do, I would write it down and think about it if I could ever prove them wrong. Alhamdulillah, I have been able to prove many people wrong.
Once in the fourth year, our team could not solve a single problem in a contest, we are very ashamed. One of the teachers in the department was insulting in front of everyone in the class saying,
“No one from RUET will ever get a job in Google or Microsoft. So pay attention to your studies. “
The word pierced me. After hearing that, I told a friend of mine, Robi, that I would finally try to go to Microsoft or Google.
The career is exactly started one week before the start of the last semester. I got a job at Cellis Rocking Software Company at Rajshahi University Job Fair.
The turning point in life came through a job at a startup called ADFENIX AB in Sweden. At first, I decided not to think about leaving the country.
But I took the opportunity to follow everyone’s advice. Being a little travel-hungry, I chose Europe despite the job offers in Australia and Singapore.
Then I got a job in a famous Swedish company Nasdaq. Meanwhile, on March 23, 2018, a call came from the dream company.
When he said on the phone that he was saying from Microsoft company, I thought I might have heard wrong.
It was hard to believe, I asked excitedly, “Are you really speaking from Microsoft?” As soon as I got the news about getting a job, I called my parents.
After informing my parents about the job, I noticed tears in my eyes. After so much time in life, I first realized that this is a tear of joy. Finally, I came to Denmark and joined the dream company.
The day was Eid. The best Eid of my life. Actually the best moment of life. Now, why did I have to reject the interview offer of another dream company.
Just three months after joining Microsoft, an interview call came from Google. But just because I joined Microsoft, I couldn’t give an interview to Google anymore.
Although I still have occasional contact with the recruiter, I have not yet decided to leave Microsoft.
Amir Khan’s movie “3 Idiots” is one of my favorite movies. As I saw in this movie, I really wanted something to happen to me.
Now I am working on my choice, one of the best software companies in the world. Although I have office till 5 pm, most of the time I work till 9 pm.
Because I like my work so much, maybe I don’t know when time is running out. About a year ago Microsoft organized a teacher seminar in Denmark where I was about to give a talk.
I went there and shared my experience with RUET. How we created educational organizations like RAPL, ASSR in RUET.
Everyone was fascinated and listened to our stories. Like everyone else, I often felt my own frustration while at RUET.
It seemed as if there were some kind of people around, who would make us think that we could do it.
At that time there were many people including Samad Bhai, Mufti Bhai, Rifat Bhai, Marine Bhai, with whose inspiration I could imagine myself in a big place.
The measure of success is different for each person. Every man succeeds in his own way. In my opinion, If lower average students like me are really successful when they come to Microsoft, I can say that every student at RUET has this potential.
