University of Dhaka
Founded in 1921, The University of Dhaka has always had the mission of uplifting the educational standards of the people of the region. It was initially meant to provide tertiary education to people who didn’t have access to higher studies till then. Subsequently, it has contributed significantly to the socio-cultural and political development of what was once East Bengal and then East Pakistan, and is now Bangladesh.
Since its establishment, the university has been fulfilling the hopes and aspirations of its students and their parents. It has, of course, not only been a lighthouse of learning, but has also acted as a torch-bearer of the people of the region in issues such as democracy, freedom of expression, and the need for a just and equitable society. It has always been associated with high quality education and research in which students as well as faculty members and alumni have played their parts. The University of Dhaka’s role has expanded beyond its classrooms and research labs during different crises the country has had to face since 1947. In many ways, thus, the university is unique, for it has played a major role in the creation of the independent nation-state of Bangladesh in 1971.

The Sanskrit department is one of the renowned departments among the 11 (eleven) departments of the Faculty of Arts which was started in 1921 with the establishment of Dhaka University.
In the beginning, its name was “Department of Sanskritic Studies and Sanskrit & Bengali”. There were six teachers among those Mahamahopadhyaya Haraprasad Shastri was the head of the department and Muhammad Shahidullah was the lecturer of Bengali. There were two streams of curriculum Ñ Sanskritic Studies and Sanskrit & Bengali. Each stream had a different syllabus and degrees were awarded accordingly.
In 1937, two separate departments, the Sanskrit Department and the Bengali Department were established, but after the partition of the country in 1947, there was a serious setback in the teaching of Sanskrit.
In the 1950-51 academic year, the name of the department was changed to Bengali and Sanskrit in association with Bengali for the progress of teaching Sanskrit. In the academic year 1970-1971, the department was known as the “Sanskrit and Pali” department. The department was lastly established in 2007 as a separate department called “Sanskrit Department”.
Currently, the Department of Sanskrit offers a four-year B. A (Honours) course and one-year Master’s course. A four-year semester system of teaching and a letter grade system of evaluation has been introduced at the B.A Honours level from the academic year 2006-2007. Here are also M.phill and Ph.D. programs.
There is a “Professor Dilip Kumar Bhattacharyya Research Centre” attached to the department. In 1999 an annual research journal entitled “Prachyavidya Patrika” is being published by the department. The department also has a bi-monthly creative magazine in Sanskrit called ‘Mandakranta’. The department has a seminar library rich in notable books and journals. There is a rich computer lab in the department which was established with the help of the High Commission of India, Dhaka. Besides these, there is a “Cultural Club” and a “Debating Club” in the department as extra curriculum activities.

Linguistics as a discipline: Language is considered a crucial human phenomenon. Linguistics, the scientific study of language and its elements, contributes to our knowledge of human society by investigating the nature of human communication. There exists a rich history of studying linguistics in many parts of the world, especially in ancient India, Greece, and China.
The importance of this discipline is now recognized throughout the world. As a branch of modern human science, linguistics deals with language, its components, and language-related domains, ranging from natural language processing and artificial intelligence of information and communication technology to neurolinguistic aspects and language pathology. Linguistics makes use of subjects such as philosophy, sociology, anthropology, literary criticism, semiotics, biology, mathematics, and statistics. ‘Linguistics’, thus ‘is an essentially outward-looking discipline combined well with other degree subjects and courses.’
