SOP(statement of purpose) হলো গ্রাজুয়েট স্কুলে (মাস্টার্স / পিএইচডি) তে এডমিশন পাবার জন্য সবচাইতে গুরুত্তপুর্ন ডকুমেন্ট।

SOP লেখার সময় নিচের বিষয়গুলি খেয়াল রাখা চাই:
১. SOP এর প্রথম প্যারায় নিজের ছোট বেলার/স্কুলে/কলেজে কোন একটা ঘটনার
(anecdote) উল্লেখ করে শুরু করবেন যেটা আপনাকে পরে ইউনিভারসিটিতে আপনার সাবজেক্ট পড়তে উৎসাহিত করেছিল।

এমন ঘটনা না থাকলে বানিয়ে নিন এমন ভাবে যেন সেটা সিম্পলের মধ্যে রিয়েলিস্টিক মনে হয়।

যেমন একবার আমার এক পরিচিত একজন এনথ্রোপোলজি পড়ে তাকে আমি একটা anecdote বানিয়ে দিয়েছিলাম SOP এর জন্য -একেকবারেই প্রথম ওপেনিং প্যারার জন্য:

“Being born and brought up in the most ethnically diverse region of Bangladesh, Chittagong, I was exposed not only to its nature surrounded by lofty mountain peaks, but also to its diverse aboriginal tribes, locally called “upojati” in Bengali.

Since my childhood, my parents used to take me to the trips of the farthest end of the most naturally appealing regions of Chittagong where the presence of aboriginal people,

different in appearance from the typical Bangladeshi, ignited my curiosity.

This stark contrast in their physical appearance sprouted wild curiosities fueled by childish inquiries, befitting a little girl as I was once.

This fascination, coupled with my childhood experiences led me to pursue the subject of Anthropology in my undergraduate.”

২. সেকেন্ড প্যারায় নিজের ব্যাচেলর (ও মাস্টার্সের যদি থাকে আর কি) এর রেলিভ্যান্ট কোর্সওয়ার্ক, রিসার্চ প্রজেক্ট এর বর্ণনা, নিজের থিসিস করার সময় কি কি টেকনিক্যাল প্রব্লেম ফেইস করেছিলেন এবং সেগুলার সমাধানের এপ্রোচে কি সলিউশন ইউজ করেছিলেন সেগুলা লিখবেন।

ইচ্ছামত টেকনিক্যাল ওয়ার্ড ইউজ করবেন কারণ SOP পড়বে যারা তারা সবাই আপনার ডিপার্টমেন্টের প্রফেসর, তাই তারা খুব ভালো করেই বুঝবে টেকনিক্যাল টার্ম গুলো।

যেমন সেকেন্ড প্যারায় লিখতে পারেন:
During my Bachelor Degree, I attended major courses like XYZ.

My bachelor thesis was based on XYZ, which proposes to achieve XYZ with higher efficiency.

During this thesis work, I developed a model that could solve third order xyz and perform calculation faster than existing xyz model.

I observed that the model yielded incorrect results if we approximate the average xyz and feed-forward it to the next cycle to generate the model.

(simply describe what was your technical challenge in thesis and how you overcame it).

By employing the concept of xyz process, I designed a xyz system for my undergraduate thesis. At this present, the preliminary results have been submitted at a peer-reviewed conference (name).

I enjoyed working in projects of diverse areas simultaneously as it let me to look at a particular problem from a different perspective.

I participated in four wrokshops arranged by the department of my university and this helped me to get familiar with current research trends in the relevant field.

I also needed to attend regular semester exams and classes during my thesis work. However, I managed to meet not only all research works but also performed well in semester exams, securing grades not less than A and A+.

৩. তৃতীয় প্যারায় এসে এখানে আপনি যে ভার্সিটিতে এপ্লাই করতে যাচ্ছেন সেই ভার্সিটির কোন প্রফেসর এর সাথে রিসার্চ করেত আগ্রহী তার বৰ্ণনা দেবেন,

My primary research interests are in xyz, abc and mnp. Professor XYZ (name of your intended professor) of ABC (name of varsity) has been working on the related areas of xyz.

His researches on xyz,and abc demand background knowledge on both xyz and abc in which my track record matches in an excellent way.

We communicated through emails before my application at ABC (University name)’s PhD program in Fall 2020.

৪. চতুর্থ প্যারায় এসে নিজের ভলান্টিয়ারিং কার্যক্রম, এক্সট্রাকারিকুলার একটিভিটি ইত্যাদি উল্লেখ করবেন আর সাথে সাথে ভবিষ্যত পরিকল্পনা কি সেটাও জানিয়ে দেবেন

During my undergraduate, I took part in various programming competitions among the Bangladdeshi Universities and won prizes (describe if any).

Due to my interest towards community based learning, I was an active member of xtyz society of my university.

Besides, I was actively engaged in the deabting society of my University, participating in various intra-university debate competitions.

Apart from that, I particiapted in the community volunteering service targeting to provide food to the poor people during the lock down period of Covid-19 in my locality.

Additionally, I was a Freshman Campus Ambassador of Schoalrship School BD, which provides higher studies guidelines to local Bangladeshi university students for free.

My passion towards science and engineering has always fueled my spirit of research, and collaboration and it will only grow stronger with time.

The motivation of Masters (or PhD) originates from my hunger of knowing the unknowns and disseminating whatever I know in a beneficial way to the learned community.

After my Masters (or PHD) I would like to join as XYZ in ABC organization. (describe where you want to join and work).

উচ্চশিক্ষার জন্য এপ্লিকেশনের একটা অংশ হিসেবে আপনাকে একটা রচনা লিখতে হবে। That is Statement Of Purpose. কিভাবে, কখন, কেন একটা নির্দিষ্ট বিষয়ে আপনার আগ্রহ গড়ে উঠলো; আপনার এই বিষয়ে পড়ার যোগ্যতা কতটুকু; কেন ঐ ইউনিভার্সিটি আপনার পছন্দ হয়েছে এবং এখানে পড়ার পর আপনার ভবিষ্যৎ পরিকল্পনা কী – এগুলো হচ্ছে SOP এর বিষয়বস্তু।

I first started to give meticulous attention to environmental economics when I started to work on my undergraduate dissertation. My advisor gave me the opportunity to research on Environmental Kuznets Curve for pollutants and causes of global warming, which later got published in Energy Policy, Elsevier. I even got more excited when I practically observed how economic practice can result in forest development or exploitation by researching on indigenous Khasi community of Bangladesh who depends only on Betel leaf culture for their livelihood. Knowledge of these researches further increased my thirst to research on the economics of natural resources.

★Comments-একেবারে প্রথম প্যারাগ্রাফেই আমি বলে দিচ্ছি আমার রিসার্চ ইন্টেরেস্ট এর ব্যাপারে। এটা এজন্য করলাম, কারণ যেহেতু আমি রিসার্চ করতে চাই Natural Resource Economics নিয়ে, একজন faculty member যাতে শুরুতেই সিদ্ধান্ত নিতে পারে পুরো SOP-টা তাকে পড়তে হবে কি হবেনা।

যেমন – একজন Wildlife Biologist অথবা Silviculture Specialist যদি পুরো এক পৃষ্ঠা পড়ার পর আবিষ্কার করে যে এটা আসলে ইকোনোমিকস সংক্রান্ত, এটা তার সময়ের অপচয়। So, start with clearly stating and justifying your interest. আপনার প্যাশনের কিছুটা এখানে উল্লেখ করতে পারেন।

I entered into the realm of Environmental Science through my admission at the undergraduate level in the Institute of Forestry and Environmental Sciences under the University of Chittagong, Bangladesh. This is considered the best higher learning educational institution for environmental science in the country. I finished the undergraduate page of my academic repertoire with 3.48 on a scale of 4.00. My undergraduate course curriculum (total 192 credits) was balanced with courses of Microeconomic Theory and Econometrics like Principles of Economics, Environmental Resource Economics, Advanced Algebra and Trigonometry, Analytical Geometry and Calculus, Statistics, Research Methodology, and several other related courses that will help me in the pursuit of graduate study in environmental economics. I secured more than 70% marks in almost all the courses. Currently, I am working on “willingness to pay for living without waste pollution”. Through this research, I am trying to acquire comprehensive knowledge of the valuation technique which, I believe, will help me in my desired study.

★Comments–এরপর আপনাকে জাস্টিফাই করতে হবে, আপনি এই বিষয়ে হায়ার স্টাডি করার জন্য কতটা উপযুক্ত। আপনার একাডেমিক কোয়ালিফিকেশন, রিসার্চ এক্সপেরিয়েন্স নিয়ে (বিনয় সহকারে) ভাব মারতে পারেন এখানে। ঐ বিষয়ে রিসার্চ করার জন্য প্রয়োজনীয় অনার্স কোর্স আপনার ছিলো কিনা, থাকলে কি কি, সেগুলো বলতে পারেন। একাডেমিক লাইফ বলতে অনার্স অথবা মাস্টার্স লাইফ-এর কথা বোঝাচ্ছি, এর নিচে (এইচএসসি’র দিকে) যাওয়া লাগবে না।

I wish to continue my research on the economics of energy; more precisely, wood-based bioenergy. I would like to research remodeling the valuation approaches of those resources to make it more apposite and just. My tentative targets would be-
a. Facilitation of forest resource management for the diverse environments using quantitative tools.
b. Determination of a policy that best minimizes both environmental and economic loss while using key forest resources.
c. How will the market behave when a certain forest resource policy is introduced?

★Comments– সামান্য কিছু স্পেসিফিকস, ফ্যাকাল্টি মেম্বারকে দেখানোর জন্য যে এই ব্যাপারে আপনার more or less clear idea আছে। যতই চান, আপনার ভবিষ্যত প্রজেক্ট নিয়ে সম্পূর্ণ পরিষ্কার আইডিয়া থাকা সম্ভব না, থাকলে আর গ্র্যাজুয়েট স্টাডি করার দরকার কি? হি হি হি…… তাই, বেশি টেনশন করার দরকার নেই।

It will be of most help in making sustainable policy for my country’s forest resources. Being a resourceful developing country overburdened with a huge population, Bangladesh needs to utilize its resources with the highest efficiency. I hope to contribute to the country’s natural resource management plan with my expertise after I am done with my graduate study. The application of my research will also have an impact on gauging the world’s natural resources outside my country.

★Comments– এই রিসার্চটার scope কেমন, কার কী কাজে লাগবে, সেগুলোর সামান্য বর্ণনা দেয়া দরকার। সোজা কথায়, what is the big picture of your research?

My research intention is to learn so that I can spread it. I dream to become a faculty member in a university where I can continue my research and teaching. To attain my goal, I need to make myself more efficient in my doctoral study which can be attained by working in an amicable environment, with obliging colleagues and extensive academic resources along with my perseverance. I believe, School of Forest Resources is the appropriate graduate school for me, as it provides all of the above including superior education from the highly qualified faculty members in the field of natural resource economics. Here, I wish to receive an education that will give me both the technical skills and the intellectual discipline to fulfill my dream of becoming a perfect researcher and a teacher. My interest in resource economics drove me to get involved in a number of relevant researches. I wish to continue along the same route if I get the chance at the University of Arkansas at Monticello.

I would like to obtain a PhD degree in physical/inorganic chemistry focusing on the development of photosynthetic devices for solar energy conversion. In particular, I am interested in the energy and electron transfer processes in natural photosystems and how we can design molecules by exploiting experimental and computational techniques. I think Prof. S’s lab would be a suitable place for me to acquire this expertise.

Our energy consumption heavily relies on fossil fuels. However, these fuels have been viewed as a major environmental threat because of their substantial contribution to greenhouse gases. One of the most promising sustainable sources of energy can be achieved by the photosynthetic process, where in the presence of chlorophyll and other accessory pigments, plants and some bacterias capture photons and convert water and carbon-dioxide into energy-rich organic compounds. The whole process is carried out by two photosystems in the thylakoid membrane of plants, marine algae, and bacterias. These complex photosystems are composed of Mn-cluster based redox sites for water oxidation, light harvesting antenna, reaction centre, and energy/electron transfer systems. In the 1990s, when researchers solved the crystal structures of the light harvesting antenna complex from photosynthetic bacteria and plants, the concept of artificial light harvesting opened a new window for solving our energy problems.

Despite numerous studies on this research, still our understanding of natural photosynthetic process requires more insights how the light harvesting complexes interact with each other, and how they perform a function like rectification, amplification, or feedback. The impact of the environment on the energy transfer including how the environment and electronic systems interact is not well understood. More studies are needed to unveil the interactions of chromophore and solvent medium for the photosynthetic proteins. The questions remained on the function of the protein framework on maintaining the quantum coherence/decoherence are not solved yet. In addition, studies require on how we can synthesis and design well-defined chromophores’ arrays connecting them in a rigid framework (in order to avoid the conformational changes and reduce quantum decoherence induced by environment) and optimize them as a small part of a larger light-harvesting system.

Over the course of my PhD studies, I would like to focus my research on these problems associated with the light harvesting processes by combining experimental and computational techniques.

I have several years of research experience in physical and environmental chemistry. For my master’s thesis at Memorial, I employed both wavefunction and density functional (DFT) theories to study the deamination reactions of glutamine (Trojan horse) in the gas phase as well as in the condensed phase using PCM (polarizable continuum model) and SMD (solvent model on density) solvation models. The mechanism of this reaction provides us with a new insight into the molecular basis for the catabolic production of toxic ammonia whose excessive amount leads to hyperammonemia disease. As a part of computational course project, I also studied the effect of solvent on vibrational frequencies, IR intensities, Raman scattering activities, solvation free energies of drugs using PCM.
During my masters, I also took photochemistry course with Prof. ZZZ and presented a well-organized review on “Towards Artificial Fuel Device: Ru-Mn Chemistry for Fuel Production” for the course. Moreover, I was a group leader in writing a well depth review on “Sigma Bond-to-Ligand Charge Transfer in Photoreactive Transition Metal complexes” for the course. My quantum background gave me wide opportunities to explore and enjoy with the true nature of photochemistry. I learnt how time-dependent perturbation theory can help us to design long lived chromophore by decreasing rate constant and equilibrium displacement with increasing the energy gap between the excited and ground state. Last summer, I also worked with Prof. ZZZ on “ground and excited properties of shape‒persistence pyrene macrocycles (a potential dye for organic solar cell due to its rigid framework between donor and acceptor)” employing experiential (Time resolved laser spectroscopy) and computational (Time-dependent DFT) techniques and presented this project on Summer Conference on Organic Chemistry at Memorial.

My previous research in Bangladesh was in the field of experimental environmental chemistry. The goal was to develop suitable low cost adsorbing materials such as crab shell chitosan and iron-based titanium-dioxide from beach sand and compare their performance on removing arsenic and other heavy metals from the contaminated water. I also have experience on applying analytical tools to understand the contamination level of arsenic and other trace elements in soil, water and sludge.

I do enjoy presenting the scientific fact putting the appropriate context in relation to other important issues. I have strong motivation to present my lecture incorporating history, mythology or fiction in science. For example, my recent presentation in chemistry colloquium at Memorial on “artificial light harvesting” was highly appreciated and was awarded first prize.

Besides research, I coordinate regular group meetings and schedule talks for Prof. X research group. I enjoy my undergraduate lab teaching at MUN as a graduate assistant and attended TOGA sessions, a teaching program where admission is limited to the best teaching assistants. I also have experiences in teaching at different institutions. In Dhaka University of Engineering & Technology, I conducted the lab classes for the engineering students and as a lecturer in Dhaka City College, I taught both theory and lab classes for general chemistry. These experiences enhanced my proficiency in maintaining a class as well as in presenting my ideas and communicating scientific principles with my students.

I believe my previous experimental background in Bangladesh, present experience in quantum, and training as a laser spectroscopist under a SWASP position at Memorial would be helpful to explore and make contributions in the field of photochemistry research at University of TTT under the supervision of SSS.

Since i was a child i have always been i fascinated with seemingly magic power of chemical reaction. As a student of chemistry, i have an avoid interest in synthesizing new and useful compounds for everyday usage. I also greatly enjoy precisely calculating reaction rates and yields the different aspect of chemistry. As well as continually changing requirement of our society most especially in the aspect of environmental field really fascinate me. I particularly love experimenting with the challenges involved in understanding chemistry. As well as its surrounding issues on top of that there are also several career options that are open to me. Including research pharmaceutical management as well as chemical manufacturing industry.

I spent a lot of time thinking about my decision to pursue chemistry. I had idea about it first because it was among my favourite subject afterwards at a fair for higher education. I was able to listen to attended general open days for various subjects. Where i had the chance to visit chemistry departments chatting with undergraduates informally.
I extremely found opportunity in research as very attractive alongside a balance in between pure and applied sciences. Finally i was convinced that chemistry Was really the subject for me because of just enjoy studying it. I have completed work shadowing at a laboratory in our locality. Where i had the chance to team about analytical industrial functions in the chemical laboratory.

Despite popular media depiction chemistry with s more than simply synthesizing novel compound from other compounds. It requires an intimate understanding of concepts from biology, physics and even the management. I have had experience in both the academic and industry aspect of field and i hope to be combine may knowledge from my experiences into a holistic understanding of chemistry and its applications. I believe that graduate degree chemistry will provide me with the hand on opportunities and the guidance i need to improve my scientific skills and pursue my goals of excelling in the industry.
